    Hi Dale,

Your question sure takes me back. I haven't dove the wrecks off Alpena since 1992. The last ten years we were using drysuits so we were pretty much immune to the water temps. However back in the day..... we did wetsuits. Spring water temps were mid 50s to upper 40s down to the thermocline which was usually around 100 feet. By mid to late Summer the surface water, down to about 20 feet or so is usually upper fifties to mid sixties, some years even warmer. Hot if you're in a drysuit, wonderfull in a wetsuit! After the warm surface water its back to reality, 50s to 40s down to the thermocline. Below 100 its near 40 degrees year round. Last wetsuits we were wearing consisted of a 1/4 inch hooded T, 1/4 inch farmer johns w/ attached boots and 1/4 inch jacket. It was brutal getting into those things on a hot day!I would say that the minimum suit for summer diving comfort down to 90-100 ft would be 7 MM farmer john, jacket and cold water hood. Hope that helps.

    Jim
