  • About Shaka Doug
    Biography
It all began a long, long time ago; back when my parents had that little fishtank in the corner of the living room. I knew then, as I still do now, I belong in the water. Down deep in the ocean, swimming with the fishes, is where I'm really at home.

Fast forward=> I finally began scuba diving in 1983 in the cold waters of Maine and New Hampshire. My first PADI card! The rest, as they say, is history. A bunch of dives later I flew to sunny California and in 1985 I became a NAUI Instructor. Diving the coast from San Diego to Santa Barbara, I got wet nearly every day for three months. Great diving but still a little chilly for my taste and work in the islands sounded too good to be true so I packed my equipment and moved to the US Virgin Islands, where I captained dive charters for about ten years. I had a really great time there but after a few nasty hurricanes came by, I decided it was time to get out.

Now I live and dive on the island paradise known as Maui, Hawaii and I absolutely love it! I stay pretty low key and run a small personalized dive tour company called Shaka Divers that finances my scuba addiction and keeps my logbook growing. This last year I was awarded a world record from the '2008 edition of the Diving Almanac and Yearbook' for having the 'Worlds Thickest Diving Logbook'. Fortunately for me I get to dive a lot and I made a promise to myself in 1997 to always log each one of my dives. My average is 305 dives per year for the last 11 years in a row. I guess at this point I consider myself semi-retired but I feel like I'm just getting warmed up. Let's get wet!
