I was first certified in 1981 in New Jersey. The training was very rigorous given by commercial divers. I recall treading water for 20 minutes or so while holding a brick above my head. Also lots of work in the pool w/o a mask. I also recall diving in the pool w/o equipment and having to don all your equipment. Our last open water dive for certification was a wreck at 80ft.
I went to California for the summer after i got certified. It was Sea D Sea in Redondo beach. I was 17 and signed up for a trip to catalina and rented a tank. The guy looked at me and my new C card. He was impressed that I was certified in NJ. To me Catalina was heaven compared to NJ.
After a 20 year+ lay off from diving I did kind of snicker at some of the training today.

Did a bunch of diving off Catalina on the Golden Dubloom. There was one laaaaaaiiidd back dive boat. Kelp beds were fantastic. Colbalt blue water. Will get there again one day.
In college did some diving north of Boston. Cooooold but water was very clear if calm. Actually got kicked out of Nahant for parking while diving and mouthing off to a butt head cop.
Just started diving again as i am now living in Florida. FARK you cold water!
I have dove in Key Largo with Silent World. West Palm Beach with the Scuba Club.
Will be hitting Blue Heron Bridge soon as well as Boynton. Want to go back to Largo asap.
