The month was October. The year, 2000. My wife and I were headed to the Grand Bahama Island for our honeymoon. I told her that while we were there, I wanted to try out diving. I always had a passion for water. She was terrified of sharks and freaked out that I would get eaten alive. Her mother didn't help matters either telling her about doctors she knew that treated people that died from embolisms. I said, "Sorry Babe. I'm going diving."
Well, I waited until the second day before we were leaving and told her that I was signing up to go diving. I knew if I went at the beginning of our trip, it would be all I would want to do. I mean come on, I am a Pisces! :o)
Anyway, we were at the counter to sign up for a resort dive at UNEXSO and she told me that she wanted to try it too. She said she needed to "face her fear."
That night, she definitely had her reservations and was freaked out. All I was concerned about how my ears would react to the pressure and wasn't very helpful. She decided to call her Father (whom, might I add, was the head writer for Jacques Cousteau for 20 years. Go figure!). He put her mind at ease telling her, "Honey. Don't worry. There are no man eating sharks in those waters." She repeated this to me with assurance. I bit my lip and said,"That's great hun!" :o) He knew the odds of her even seeing a shark would be miniscule.
The next day, which is a whole story in itself, we went diving. We were both sold for the rest of our lives and I kicked myself wishing I had done this sooner. Once my wife saw the absolute beauty of the ocean, and felt the meditative peace from breathing and moving underwater, it was over. All of her fears washed away. We found a mutual hobby and passion that we both enjoy experiencing together. I not only had a Newlywed, but a dive buddy for life! :o)
