I just finished booking a week in Coz over Christmas and can't wait to get back down there. The wonderful Mexican people are what make Coz one of our favorite destinations. I won't be worried about my safety and I'd take you up on that cold cerveza, Vry, if only Cancun were a little closer. I'm buying if you happen to find yourself in Coz that week.

Well, as the original poster on this thread, I did`nt want to start a `Bullets over Baja debate !

I was in San Diego in May. I was hoping to get over, with my hosts, to Mexico for a day, but we were advised not to go, and that was mainly for the reputation that Tijuana has got for drug related violence, and partially because of the two hours wait to get back into the U.S. I was disappointed to say the least.

As for violence in the US, yes there is a substantial amount, but the rest of the `western civilisation` is catching up with you. What does amaze me about you Yanks, is that, over the past 20 odd years I have travelled to Florida, New England and California. I`ve never felt threatened, never had anything but friendly, open hearted and welcome experiences, yet as a nation, you continue to murder each other at an astonishing rate ?

Will I go to Mexico next year - You bet ! To not go will have mean`t the criminals have won. My biggest fear is that the visit will coincide with the American university and college spring break.............being surrounded by students, now that will be scary.

Mexico Murders

Ok folks POP quiz, Who has had more deaths? American soldiers in Iraq in 2008 or Mexican Soldiers in Mexico 2008? Winner hands down is.........Mexico!!!

You see folks in the first 7 months of 2008 there have been 2,400+ Murders in Mexico!! taking up approx 300 is Mexican Police and over 200 SOLDIERS. This is up from the 2,200 murders( drug related) in All of 2007 ( my source is the Imparcial newspaper in Hermosillo Aug 1, 2008 edition).

Of th 900 Murders in Juarez in 2008, 13 arrests have been made of which 6 were for Domestic( ie husband killed wife type) so there is a 7% chance of getting caught. Its worse to try to rob a OOXXOO or S mart store....

so the 11 headless ones in Yucatan is a drop in the bucket, since they killed almost 300 in Sinaloa( including a 12 yr old American boy on holiday with his family) or the 12 that were gunned down in Creel including a 1 year old( AK47s sprayed into a crowd of Tarhumara indians) in one 15 minute attack....BTW no one has been prosecuted in either case..

Enjoy your trip to Mexico.....

Its not Columbia?!?!? Columbia is much safer than Mexico in the big cities and near the coast. The mountains and jungle are the only dangerous parts now.

In Mexico its Kidnappings, in the entire border area....enough, its really bad....

I live on the border, We have had over 30 gunshot victims come over to the Level 3 trauma center here from Juarez alone and 22 were AMERICAN citizens, getting shot inthe TOURISTS zones. so of the 3% that survived the shootings to get to the US 66% were AMERICANS....

The Cancun Coz, Akumal posters here have a vested interest in you coming down, so they will down play the danger...be aware, it is not limited to the Drug wars, AMERICANS are being shot and killed EVERY DAY.

When the Mayor and Chief of Police ask for Asylum in the US cause the entire police force has quit....yeah buddy really safe!!!

Don,
JUST DID NOT WANT IT TO BE BRUSHED OFF AS "EVERY COUNTRY HAS ITS PROBLEMS"

Every day we get a "story" here. A group of gunmen went into a Sports bar, told everyone to get down, executed two, wounded three "bystanders"....that was yesterday, Juarez...I can give you a new story every day...7 dead in 11 days in the "big city" of Cananea ( look it up, this is after 23 dead in may 2007 including 5 cops) end of July...How about I post a new story every day as they come out of Mexico??Maybe the apologists will admit its REALLY BaD....
MORE INFORMATION:
Mexico has been declared Off limits by Ft Bliss, and Both NM state University and UTEP have held sessions with the freshmen, telling them Do no go to Mexico....We do not let our officers go into Juarez any more...Wealthy Mexicans are implanting rice sized GPS in their skin so they can be tracked and its already saved two....

With all due respect this thread started about y u c a t a n and bodies being dumped in touristy places, touristy places at the yucatan peninsula are cancun coz. Playa etc., this is a diving forum. It is not a tijuana or southern texas forum it is not a crime forum or even a lets see who has more deaths kind of forum, bottom line, yes there is crime in this country, yes there are kidnappings in big cities (not tourists), yes there are so many death, but again and sorry to insist, this was not even close to cancun, cozumel and the awesome diving areas that both offer. And i insist, cancun, cozumel and the whole yucatan peninsula are s a f e to come diving. I am not going to fall on the argument that other countries do have crimes, wars, killings, etc. I live in cancun for 20 years, i grew up in mexico city, i have never been mugged, held up nor any of my family, i also went to college at another country where i was held up beat up for 10usd, i have worked directly with tourism for almost 20 years and never had complaints about tourists being killed just for coming to visit. Yes i have heard complaints about timeshare marketing or the typical overcharging taxi guy but that is it.
Please have in mind that posts on this forum are read by many and this may affect peoples minds about coming here, not to mention it is already going to be a superslow season and thousands of people here depend on tourism to make a living
what really worries me is and i quote ..."americans are being shot every day"........that may apply to other places in mexico but not i repeat not ever in cancun coz or the tristate peninsula i have never heard such a thing but if anyone has proof of this please post it or post the enormously bad experience in cancun and coz. That made this posts apppear here, and i will be the first to warn people. Deaths of tourists here have been by drowning, strokes, and one ran over by a bus, there was a case in 2006 about an israeli girl that got lost and not found and cancun akumal etc are not about to try to market knowing it is so bad for tourists. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but these may affect other peoples way to make a living. If you are a tourist and are planning to come visit the area please go to your local whatever goverment offices for "real" knowledge about crime in this area against tourism, or even check our local newspapers on line, i will be happy to provide the links.
I do not want to fall in any arguments of any kind just providing a first hand opinion on the subject of this thread, yucatan and touristy areas
sorry for long post and by the way, Columbia is I believe District in the USA, Colombia is a country that has had many drug related and guerilla problems and has nothing to do with Yucatan

since you put it that way, let's compare some figures... let's use Detroit for this little experiment..
in 2007, there were over 421 murders, 592 rapes, (and just to save some time) over 21,000 violent crimes reported... and that is just one city.. with a population of under 1,000,000 people (source:http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/2007prelim/table4.htm). you want to talk about a dangerous place? I guess some Americans are great at pointing fingers at other countries problems, but when it comes to domestic issues not so much... After all, "America is #1!", right?

Is not the vast majority of this violence taking place relatively close to the US/Mexican border?
