So compare Cozumel to Cabo Diving....

I know Coz ranks among the best but what does Cabo offer? How far are the rides out to the dive sites? I heard it is a long boat ride to the Sea of Cortez. How long is it? What are the pros and cons of both Coz and Cabo? Thanks!

    Hello,

In truth, you cant even begin to compare. These are two absolutly different oceans .

There is no better place from the two you mention, Cabo Pumo which is at the entrace to the Gulf of California (AKA Sea of Cortez) for example in incredibly more biodiverse than the Mex Caribbean.

Google both names and see what pops up.

    Cabo Diving

Hello Divers.the very best about Cabo is the amount of tropical Fish you will see.On every Dive you will see more of the 800 species of of fish than you will able to remember. There are Mantas ,Turtles,Sea Lions,Whale Sharks, lobsters,Giant eels, and all of this is just a 5 minute Boat ride from the Dock so a two tank Dive is just 4 hours and your back at 1.30pm with half of the day still left.
The Dives to Cabo Pulmo are a 7 or 8 Hour Trip with 4 hour being Driving time by Van. But all the rest are really close.
Summer is the Best with Vis up to 150 feet and water Temp.s around 80 Degrees.i like late July to December.
Coz does not have the amount of sea Life as Cabo and the Trips are all Day.
diving Coz in winter is a nightmare. The Wind A lot of times closes the port and big waves make you sea sick.In Cabo this almost never happens all the close spot are protected bt the cliff that overlook the dive spots.

Sue, I am not clear on the dive sites. You said it is only a 5 min ride to the site but it takes 4 hrs overall. Are you under water for 3.5 hrs? Please explain. Also, are there any other dives that take a long time to get to besides the one you mentioned? Thanks.

Cabo dive sites have three areas that most shops regularly dive. The local dives are a 10 minute ride from the marina and include Sand Falls, 90' deep, Pelican Rock, Neptune's Finger, Land's End. Dives can have assorted reef fish, eels, sea lions, maybe a shark or sea horse if your lucky. Further out dives are Santa Maria, Blow Hole, Chileno, 30 minute or more boat trip. Rock formations with urchins, eels and assorted reef fish with the possibility large schools of fish. The better dives to my mind are at Cabo Pulmo. Two hour drive from Cabo with a 15 minute boat trip to the dive site. Some corals but nothing compared to Cabo. I have seen more fish on one dive at Cabo Pulmo than any other dive. Had the good fortune to see a bull shark last summer. Best time to dive is July to November for visibility.

Coz...well there is a reason why divers return year in and year out. The coral formations, even after Wilma damage, are amazing. There is also diversity in the terrain of the dive sites and opportunities to seek out a wide variety of sea creatures and corals. January is my usual time to visit so the previous comment is not necessarily from experience. In 10 days mid January, the port was closed only once. Visibility was 80' to 100' and the day after the port was closed I had the joy of diving with 29 eagle rays. AWESOME!! Most 2 tank dives may take 5+ hours but the SI's are longer as the first dive is usually deeper than at Cabo.

Diving in Coz in the winter and Cabo in the summer works well for me as I hate Caribbean humidity in the summer and both are very convenient to get to from Colorado!

Appreciate the rest of the post but what's this about...?
    Coz...the Trips are all Day.
What did you mean by that...?
You can test the tanks you breathe or - dive on hope.

While this may be true for some OPs, Cozumel has so many different choices when it comes to who you want to dive with. The last time I was there, we dove every day for a 7 am departure. It was great if you wanted to have more of your day to spend doing other things.
