Crew calls off search for OC diver

By Ben Penserga

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OCEAN CITY -- U.S. Coast Guard rescue crews called off their search Wednesday night for an Ocean City boater missing after a morning dive several miles from the resort's coastline.

The search was suspended at sunset and will likely not resume, said Timothy Grant, Coast Guard master chief in Ocean City.

Angelo Russo, 28, and another man were on a recreational dive at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday south of the resort's Inlet when they surfaced and Russo became distressed, Coast Guard Ensign Jay Fair said. Russo attempted to climb onto the boat, the Old Navy, but he submerged. Others on the dive were unable to find him, Fair said.

A boat and two Coast Guard helicopters, along with a fire-and-rescue dive team from Millville, searched a six-mile radius where Russo went down. A civilian boat also joined the search after hearing the distress call.

Fair said poor water visibility and depths of 50 feet made the search more difficult.

"We've been scouring the area extremely hard," Fair said.

The missing diver is the second water-related incident in Ocean City in two days.

A 40-year-old West Ocean City man was found dead Monday in the bay near Bahia Marina.

Ocean City Police said Thomas B. Hughes, a bartender at a nearby bar, was apparently trying to untie his fishing boat at about 1:30 a.m. when he fell into the water.
