REEF.org is sponsoring several fish identification seminars which you can attend from your computer. Each seminar is free and lasts about one hour, covering 10 to 12 fish in different regions. For more information go to REEF Training Webinars | Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF).
I attended one of these last year at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It was EXCELLENT. After the lecture with color slides, we walked around the aquarium identifying the fish!
My only suggestion would be maybe to buy the suggested book for your diving region ahead of time so you have your own pictures of the fish to refer to while taking notes. Immediately after the seminar, my husband and I went and bought a copy of the book they suggested. The book was excellent, too.
Thanks for the positive endorsement Krysta. The books are great to have but not required for these seminars. Each online seminar will focus on 10 to 12 fish. They are designed to learn in a casual environment with no tests (but there will be a quiz to challenge your new knowledge).
