Are there any exercises that people do that are benifical to SCUBA.
I go to the gym every 2nd day and push weights around (intensity training mostly), I do a fair amount of leg work with the swiss ball (squats, hamstring curls, etc).
I also ride a mountain bike around (sometimes into trees) both days of the weekend for between 2-4 hours each ride. This is in a forrest that has dedicated trails in it for biking.
Just curious if there is anything else I should be doing that would help out with scuba ?(aside from swimming which I plan to pick up once my gyms pool is repaired)
Quick background. I started out at 123kgs (271lbs) a year ago, and have been on a fitness kick since then, I just tested at 87.5kgs (193lbs) and 20% body fat on monday (I am 193cms/6'3" tall). So I am not scared of doing hardwork or exercising :14: If its stuff I can do at home the better it is
Congrats on the weight loss, and as for the question swimming is the best exercise. You'll find you use muscles that you don't get to use in the other exercises you're doing, i.e. you'll find new areas that hurt a bit. Keep up the good work and once the pool is fixed start swimming.

Try doing some couch potato(e) exercises during your SI to avoid DCS.

Your in better shape than most divers. Just keep in mind Scuba isn't exactly a high impact, high intensity sport. Average health and average fitness is more than adequate for most recreational diving.
You have a good balance of strength and aerobic training on the mt bike. I favor aerobic fitness, it lowers your resting heart rate, which lowers your respiration and hence your air usage too.
Most divers do as little real "exercise" as possible on a dive so as to minimize air usage, economy of movement is the sign of an experienced diver. It's also why some really out-of-shape appearing divers do fine underwater. But obviously it's better to be in shape, it minimizes your chance of a cardiac incident, which is probably the leading cause of diver casualties.
So you're fine, good job on the weight loss, practice some kick drills in the pool, those muscles are your engine, not so much your arms which most divers keep by their sides.

It depends on the heart rate if the mt. bike is aerobic or not. One could bike for several hours and it not be aerobic. HR depending on age should be approx.140 for an adult male age 35 to get the most benefit. It feels SOOOO good too...love it..
