I've done my classroom and pool training in New York with SSI and would like to go to Florida for a long weekend to complete my 4 open water training dives. I've been looking around this site as well as google in general to try to find some recommended OW shops / instructors in Florida but I'm not having the best luck. Can someone help me out?
Thanks!
Key Largo would be my first choice, good sites, most of the time the weather is great along with the vis. There is also plenty of dive operators in the area.
They do the check-out dives for my children; we do classroom and closed-water here in Chicago. I have used them for 15 years and always have been satisfied.

agree, that's what I did. Tons of operators, lots of great and easy dive sites so you can not only do your checkouts but have good dives doing it. Going back to dive in the quarry after that was quite a bummer...
Hey,
Looks like you have many great ideas by other members, only thing is the ocean can get quite mean at times! and screw up plans best laid by men and dive Opp's meaning if you have lots of time hit the Keys Or Southern Florida!
But if you want to get the C-card for sure no ifs-ands or buts -I said BUT!!
Go to Florida's Spring country! you ain't going to get blow off a spring-no 6' waves, nope no one puking over the side or in side the boat man!
Instructors and great ones can be found or recommended at most springs one organized place you may call or e-mail them is, Florida's Pre-Historic Spring -- Devil's Den!
ask if they have any one they could recommend to certify you thru the agency you are in-get in contact with the instructor=get a reference or two-don't pay in advance, get all your paper work, temp c-cards,photos,money in order and GO DIVING!
Good luck!Have fun! JUST MY 2 CENTS

thank you everyone for your help! I don't really have a preference for where I go in Florida which is why it's been difficult to decide. The springs sound like maybe my best bet for just doing check out dives? i'm going to take a look at some of the sites you've all posted and hopefully make a good choice. thanks again!

Nope OW & your Advanced open water can be done in the springs-water-depth-skills & drills!
You get a cool Floridian instructor each day you may get into a different spring!
It's so much fun- we are planning a early springs trip this year and looks like a whole group of divers are coming down to get C-card's with our local shop instructor and some I hope members of our dive group prior to our big pool opening up north!
LOL
