Read Aquanauts very informative post again - also note what you DON'T have to do under their program is as important as what you do:
"In exchange for that diving we at Aquanauts do ask -- only once you begin your Divemaster training -- for you to do some work. However, unlike some truly "dodgy" Thai programs -- none of which are located in Pattaya -- we do not have you do any work that is not directy related to making you a better and safer diver. You lead dives for tourist customers, assist instructors with courss and manage the boat (taking care of the dive roster, working with the boat crew, etc.)
You do NOT pump tanks, clean gear, work in the shop, have to sell anything nor any menial labor. We have paid Thai... '
Anything having to do with moving tanks is hard, backbreaking work (and easy to hurt youself if a tank slips) - I don't care your age, physical condition, etc -
These are great questions to ask a potential training center and get SPECIFIC answers before you sign up
To find out "later" you have to carry and fill 100 tanks a day as part of your "training" would not be good.
Well i have a student education visa and yes i can learn how to pump tanks and clean dive kit ive checked with the Police in soi 5 as long as you are not been paid which i am not then their is no problem .I also agree with Cowley by having the know means you have more chance to get a job in the diving world ,how do your internships get over this Bob ???? do they get jobs or not like to know Bob ,how are you ment to learn the business if you cant join in ?????????????..Happy diving
Harry -- You're misunderstanding. What we said is interns are not FORCED or REQUIRED to pumps tanks, etc. Anyone who wants to learn to use a compressor, etc. is given the opportunity. But it's THEIR choice, which is preferable, don't you think?
If I were young again, I would sign up for the internship just to get the Student Visa and all the diving. I love Thailand, particularly out around the Similan Islands. There are worse ways to live than diving every day.
