I have noticed many "docs" on SB. What kind of doctor are you? Do you self-identify as a "doc" or "dr" on SB? Why, or why not?

As an aside, "Doctor," as a title, is originally an agentive noun of the verb docēre ('to teach'). It is used as a designation for a person who has obtained a doctorate-level degree. The first academic title of doctor was applied to scholars of law. The degree and title were not applied to scholars of other disciplines until the 13th century.

Interesting observation........I can tell you I am not a scholar of law though......

I have been using "doctormike" as a user name for years, long before I joined ScubaBoard. I was given a doctor status label because I was asked to be a medical moderator. I'm a pediatric ENT doc...

I didn't use anything about being a doctor in my username on any board, as my being a doctor has nothing to do with being on a scuba bulletin board. But given the comment Pete quoted the other day (person complained about me posting "as though she is a doctor") maybe I should have. I'm a general surgeon turned ER doc.

You wouldn't know it by my name either, but I was called "doc" in the Navy. I was a corpsman. Now I'm a Paramedic/Firefighter.

I'm not a doc, i'm really more of a Grumpy.
But in real life i'm a respiratory therapist. and work almost exclusivly in the ER, so i work with plenty of docs

Would it be fair to observe that most SB "docs" are non-physician, non-surgeon, non-Ph.D. "other" healthcare "professionals?"

Well, doctormike and Doc Vikingo are docs; Doc Intrepid is a Ph.D.

My premise is that, the higher your education, the less you feel that you need to convey it to others by using an honorific.
