I'm respectfully going to differ with Jill. Unless you have time to get certified AND do a reasonable amount of diving before going, don't do the cenotes. Snorkeling and swimming in them is worth while, for sure, and they are VERY beautiful. But they deserve divers with good buoyancy control and some body awareness, so that folks don't kick the decorations or bang the ceiling. They are, although run for tourists, dives in an overhead environment, and I think every diver should have some idea of how well they cope with minor issues during a dive before they do them. (If your mask floods and you panic and bolt into the ceiling, the outcome will not be pretty.)
The Discover scuba option is good if you are just interested in seeing if this is something you would like to do. I think I took 4 discover/ resort dives (over about 12 years) before I was ready to commit to an open water course. I wonder now what took me so long.
You can discover scuba diving in a DSD (discover scuba diving day). This takes you only one day with the most important theory, which is really less and then one dive in the pool and after that you go straight to the sea. I can recommend you the diving school diversity diving in playa del carmen. nice people, really professional and fun! they offer lots of packages which include diving in cenotes or cozumel except of playa del carmen. so just visit their homepage Playa del Carmen Scuba Diving | Diversity Diving in Playa del Carmen, Mexico I think it's the perfect place to learn diving!
