Under the east span you will get depths between 20 and 23 feet max depth, on the west side 18-19 feet. Most computers will activate between 3 and 5 feet and even if you are above that depth they usually have a time limit (maybe 2 to 4 minutes) before they consider the dive ended. You may want to check your settings and see if you can change those settings.
Sounds like the black with yellow fish were juvenile gray or french angelfish. And you might have seen a pikeblenny, quite a sight!
Hope you return to spend more time here when you can really enjoy the wildlife.
Gripes I developed so far are that I do not like that the dive computer only activates after being 5 feet down. Since we were only in 10 feet of water the dive computer keep thinking I was not diving but only in a "wet" state when getting closer to the surface than 5 ft.
I also found out that my Aeris Velocity XP fins are actually too small for my feet. Guess I will need to just get the next size up. either way though it was fun and I can't wait to get my card and take a trip down to the keys within the next few weeks!

What type of computer? Many activate at 3-5 feet. They generally do not end the dive unless you are shallow for a minute or more. Some are user configurable on how deep and how long before the dive ends. Mine does not start another dive unless the SI exceeds 5 minutes I believe. You should be able to activate it prior to the dive but likely it won't start the dive until you reach depth. 3-5 feet is common. Even on a 10' dive you won't be bouncing to the surface often. I do not read complaints from other BHB divers so may be a setting.....
Bummer on the fins, they generally will not take them back once used.
Congrads on the Cert! You live in an awesome place to dive!

we only went diving on the one side. My instructor said that the he did not think the other side was accessible without swimming around to it.. and since the tide was pushing us back out we couldn't get anywhere else

Computer is an Oceanic Atom 2.0. I did do a manual activation but it was mainly due to the to instructor bringing us up after a few minutes to talk to us about a change of plans (tide too strong). I'm not too terribly upset about the fins really. I liked the fins themselves.. just need a bigger size. Going to try and see if I can find the same ones if possible. Thanks on the congrats! I actually picked up my C-card on Wednesday night so it is official now

Sounds likely that you dove in front and on the west side (to your right as you face the water). Now that your certified you can dive this awesome site and start enjoying things. Just remember to get in the water about 30 minutes before hi tide. (I'm usually in about an hour earlier). Because it is so shallow you can easily get 60-90 minutes dives on an AL 80 (tank).
Here is a great tide table for the bridge: Tides for Port of Palm Beach (Lake Worth)
Just scroll to the correct month and hover over the day and you will see the tide times.
Hope to see you at the bridge sometime and welcome you to the Bridge Troll group.
I thought it was a cannabis related handle "scoob" being a gunjah cigerette.
Not what I actually intended lol

Thanks for the table! I found this page online: Blue Heron Bridge and if you look at the mini map they show we actually dove the front and East site but not really the west site. We couldnt go even in front of the bridge due to the stong current so we stayed to the side of the bridge but still on the East side. I am sure I will return again soon though..
