I am thinking of blowing of work on Friday and driving down to Back Beack in Rockport MA to dive with my sons. Never been there before, mostly dive in Maine. Any information on parking, conditions or warnings would be appreciated. Looking for an easy to moderate dive. Thanks in advance.
There's metered parking along the beach, and an easy entry with a concrete ramp leading down to the water on the far left-hand end of the beach (facing the water). It's an easy dive with a good representative sampling of the local critters and terrain... I can't think of anything worth warning you about.
There are also stone steps laid about half-way down the beach accross from the restrooms, though this spot can be a bit stinky to park at.
I was there last Saturday (working on my AOW), and the parking spaces were pretty well all taken by 7am. It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend, so you may want to plan for a crowd.
The dive was very straight forward: no surf, little current and a gradual slope. Nice dive. Have a great time.
Yeah, the last time I drove by Back/Front Beaches all the parking spots were taken by 8am and there were tons of divers crawling all over the place. Lots of classes are held there. I went directly to Folly and there were still a few spots left across the street from the Lobster Pound/Restaurant. For my money, Folly is usually much less crowded than Back, esp. on weekends. Entry/exit can be a bit tricky due to slippery rocks, though, but I've never had a problem. Also, a third option for easy entry/exit and plentiful parking would be Pebble Beach. Good luck and have fun diving.
Just back from Back Beach (pun intended). Had a great time, nice easy drives, no current to fight. Lots of lobsters, crabs, flounder and some stripped bass. There were only 3 parking spots used all morning, including me. I will have to blow off work a bit more often, sounds like the weekends are a zoo. Thanks for all the advice.
