I was certified at Inland Divers in Leicester MA in 1978. I've lost my c card and am having a b*tch of a time getting it replaced. I can't remember the name of the guy and girl who ran the class. I'm pretty sure he had a nickname of Red (or maybe Bear, yeah, I know, but it was a long time ago and the 70's ). I don't think Ero signed the card. If there's anyone out there who might be able to fill in some blanks, it'd really be appreciated. I have a trip to Bonaire coming up in the next month and the records don't show up on the NAUI web site since they're so old.
hate to say it, but you might be SOL. You could look into an advanced certification if you can convince an instructor of your "experienced diver" status.
you were certified in the 70's..how much diving have you done since then? If you have been active in the community perhaps the LDS that you dive thru can assist you.If you have not been active and have not dove in a numbre of years take the open water class over again.
Not only gear has changed but I am sure you have changed in the past 40 years too.

Are you sure that NAUI doesn’t have paper records based on your name and location? I had them replace a tired old card and it seemed like they had all the records. This is not true for NASDS, now owned by SSI, because records were lost in a fire. You might try calling NAUI and make a personal appeal. The lady that I worked with was very helpful.
In '95 the YMCA was able to replace my 1970 certification, but just a couple of years later they no longer had records for my sister, who certified in @1972.
Even if records are recoverable, a "refresher", update, or new advanced certification is advised if you have been away from the sport for even a few years. Learned this lesson the hard way, myself back in the 80's!
I thought NAUI HQ burned down back in the 80's (90's?) and they lost all the old records. I think PADI has an "Experienced Diver" program, but it might not be any more cost effective than taking a new OW class over again. This is of course if you have been active in diving, if not... just do it over again.
It sounds like a refresher is in order. No offense but equipment has changed so much since the 70s, heck even procedures have changed. When I took my first open water the had us cracking the bottom of the mask to clear it, now with LV masks teaching the one handed method is pretty universal. It would also be a good idea to practice some emergency procedures with professional supervision before getting back into open water. Can you imagine trying to do a shared air with someone who has not done it in 30 year?
Love guys who post 1 time just to get info. Call NAUI HQ first. As NAUI instructor - pay the bucks and get a refresher to replace your paper C card which is way old.
