Hannibal and the army of Carthage in the campaign that ended with their victory at Cannae. Marching from Spain to the middle of Italy while living off the land and messing up Rome's backyard is an achievement that it is hard to beat.

Now if they'd only gone on to Rome, we all be still be doing sacrifices to Baal today.

I don't understand why the Army of Northern Virginia is on even a top 20 list.

Might have to include the Macedonians under Alexander and perhaps the invading Carthaginians under Barco. The panzers streaking through western Europe and later deep into the USSR in the early days of WW II have to be given consideration. The US Marines at Beallu (sp?) Wood in WW I were amazing.

Troy might be a myth, the seige may have never happened.

The Army of Northern Virginia was the best of it's time and possibly one of the best ever. If you don't know why it's on someone's list, you don't know much about its accomplishments against very long odds.

Barca did go to Rome. His mistake was not going into Rome.

Alexander has to be on the list.

If you mean the Barco under that consolidated the hold on Spain, he should be a contender, not the ancestor by the same name who lost Silicy. Still, his troops didn't do a fraction of what some others did--like crossing the Alps and beating Romans in Italy.

If it's any branch, we might add the British in the War of 1812 especially under Neslon (although briefly embarrassed by a small country with a fledging navy), ; the superb French Army under Napolean up to the march on Moscow.

(I wouldn't add the British who fought at Waterloo since they got whipped twice by militia in subsequent battles--once at Baltimore and finally in New Orleans).
