NDR - The most amazing speech - Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin's 1st spoken movie, an amazing speech:

How true his words are, then and more so now...

Great speech indeed. So sad that so many of us tend to forget our humanity. Thank you for posting, here is a video I like.

That was 80 years ago, I thought we've done a pretty good job doing what he wanted.

And sadly, it was statements like that one that led J. Edgar Hoover decide that he was un-American, which is why Hoover essentially got him exiled a decade later.

And this has what to do with Cozumel and Diving? Also, Chaplin was a pederast and an avowed communist. That is what got him run out of the country. Good Riddance.

Lovely. A guy making a scene and making the cops look foolish. Why is he only hugging cops? Because he is pretty sure they have been trained to NOT kick his #$%. Seriously, touching people like that without consent? I am all for free speech but picking on and pushing the limits with those poor public servants just isn't right. Someone other than them probably decided the community generally doesn't want people yelling on megaphones. I have to think if you did that in Coz, you would be quickly hustled off by the po-po or at least I hope. Certainly if you weren't native born! (There is some Coz relevance.)

And as for old Charlie: He may have been a commie, but at least he was all for a strong democratic army, eh? Have a conscience and kill the bad guys...

    I didn't start the thread.

Charlie Chaplin was never a communist. His views were certainly to the left of center, as is seen by the speech in the OP. He was labeled along those lines by Hoover during the red scare--sad to see the myth continued here.

Chaplin was never remotely a pederast. A pederast is attracted to and has sex with young (prepubescent) boys. Chaplin's interests were to girls in the 16 year-old range. That is called ephebophilia.

Three times he was summoned before the Senate comittee to testify and three times he refused to show up. You'd think that with his great intelligence and theatrical talents he'd be chomping at the bit to defend himself. I'm not going to second guess the Dept. of States' decision to refuse him re-entry to the U.S.

And as for his sexual appetites, call it what you wish it is still RAPE. In his time, a 16 year old was a minor and that constituted rape in the eyes of the law. Minors could not give consent to sex with an adult.

Much like Roman Polanski who sodomized a 13 year old girl in L.A., Chaplin was a pariah and no one to be admired.

This should be in the non-diving forums rather than here.

One can certainly find fault with Chaplin in several areas, including his predeliction for young girls. I consider a young woman anyone under 40! Was he a Communist? I don't know. Certainly many were labeled that during Hoover's reign of terror. Besides, is being a communist a crime in a county of supposed pluralism and freedom to vote one's conscience? It is just one set of ideas, shown to be as bankrupt as laissez faire capitalism has been. Never has attracted that many followers in modern day America so what's the big concern? I would never adhere to either economic/social policy.

Dr. Bill: Not THAT kind of doctor... but I'll take a look at it anyway!

You ought to read up on it. Befopre he was summoned to that tribunal in one of the blackest moments in U.S. history, Hoover essentially had him barred from re-entering the country. Chaplin made a statement about it. He had no compelling reason to re-enter the country and continued with a very satisfying life outside of it.

I prefer to use accurate terms. You said he had sex with young boys, which is simply not true. You think I am quibbling over terms; I think you you are spreading a lie.

The law varies by jurisdiction, and you seem a little mixed up on the history of those changes. Here is a paragraph from a Wikipedia article on the subject:

In the United States, by the 1880s, most states set the age of consent at 10-12, and in one state, Delaware, the age of consent was only seven. A New York Times article states that it was still aged seven in Delaware in 1895.[6] Female reformers and advocates of social purity initiated a campaign in 1885 to petition legislators to raise the legal age of consent to at least sixteen, with ultimate goal to raise the age to eighteen; the campaign was successful: by 1920, almost all states had raised the age of consent to 16-18.[7][8]

So, we know how you feel about Chaplin's fondness for women in the 16-18 year range, whether it was technically legal or not. I am not a fan of it myself. In comparison, how do you feel about J. Edgar Hoover's sexual preferences? Should he have been kicked out of the country for that reason?
