SCUBA DIVING and the Shooting Sports.
On my podcast, Pod Diver Radio (poddiver.org), I recently mentioned that I am also into guns and the shooting sports. I received email from a listener who was "shocked" that a scuba diver was also into a "violent" activity like firearms. "Scuba is such a peaceful activity, I don't understand how you can also participate in such violence (ie the Shooting Sports)" .
Maybe it is cultural thing? Pod Diver gets 30,000 plus unique downloads a month. About 1/3 of those are from European Divers. European divers may have a different perspective on guns than us "good old boys" in the US of A. I know many of my wreck diving and cave diving brethren also share a passion for the shooting sports. Building and customizing a rebreather is very similar activity to building and customizing an AR-15. While I am not a hunter, I know many divers who are also hunters. Hunters, like divers are the force behind habitat preservation and conservation. It seems a love for the outdoor world is a common thread.
The question; Scuba Diving and Shooting Sports are they compatible hobbies? How many divers do both? How many divers are put off by guns? Is this just a difference between the USA and the rest of the scuba diving world? Comments Please.
