This may be premature, but my local dive club is planning its annual Polar Bear Dive for Casino Point on January 18, weather permitting. The plan is to go over to Catalina around 9 am, do a couple of dives at the U/W park, then come home around 5. The Express has not yet published its schedule past Jan 5, so departure times are not yet known. I just thought that I would post this in case anyone wanted an excuse to go over there and try out what Santa brings. I will put it on the calendar when things are clearer...
Speaking of the Express schedule, the only downside of their winter schedule from my point of view is that there are fewer runs to Two Harbors. Casino Point is certainly fun too, but having done a lot of diving there in the past, this summer I got into the habit of going to Two Harbors. I'd take day trips over from San Pedro and shoredive off the beaches (I suppose you could also rent a kayak or small motorboat and make it out to Ship Rock, Bird Rock or the nearby coves without too much difficulty). But alas, in the wintertime they don't have any same-day returns that give you any time to do anything, much less dive. So short of scheduling an overnight trip, I'll have to wait a few months to get back there.
