I have heard rumors that the incidence of theft of gear left unattended while diving is beginning to increase with the onset of Summer. Rather than deal with rumor, what have your experiences been?

In the 10 or so dives I've done there (I think these were done over 4 or 5 days - will need to review my log book to be sure), I've never had any problem with leaving gear out, but I've also only been diving since November, so never yet "in season". Plus, when I've gone, it's been with a big Sport Chalet group, usually comprised of a # of instructors/classes. So even if the smaller group/class I'm with is all in the water, there's usually someone from our larger group at the surface at all times.
I remember on our first trip out there, my buddy and I asked our instructor about the safety of our stuff, and we were told that we could get a locker if we wanted, but that it wasn't necessary, as they had never had problems in the years they had been diving there. Kinda scary if that's changing - I know it's true, but I hate to think you can't trust people.

about now, but in the 3 years I have been diving over there I have yet to have had something disappear from my belongings (knock on wood), and have not heard of anything from anyone else either.

With the number of divers in the area, I would think it would take someone with big "Nads" to walk over and pick something up.

My dive buddy and me have left our stuff along the wall during our SI and gone over to get lunch, and came back an hour later with everything in tact.

I've been diving at the Point for many years and leave gear out including computers and video cameras. So far no incidents other than another diver mistakenly taking one of my booties, which was quickly returned.

Although Avalon has had a reputation as being "crime free," we have had increasing incidences of petty theft and burglaries. Much of that seems to be off-season when jobs (and money) are scarcer. Local thieves would probably have a hard time getting rid of dive equipment with so few outlets here. It is easier to fence a stereo.

I would definitely take cautions. I don't bring my wallet or other valuables to the Park.

Although our Chamber of Commerce would prefer I not mention it, there were also several rapes last year. For the women on the board, the town is generally very safe in this respect but if you are walking alone at night in unpopulated areas (say back to the campground), please take some precautions. And to the men, this is not entirely limited to women! It concerns me because a former girlfriend and a dive buddy were both raped, although not here on the island.

It seems there is no place left on Earth where we are 100% safe 100% of the time. :(

I would secure it in a locker. Also, my dive bag does lock, not that I always remember that.

About the rape thing, there is also a lot of alcohol consumed on the island (I've done my share) by people who know they won't have to drive anywhere. This is the kind of thing predators use to their advantage.

I cant even begin to recall how many times I have been at the divers park over the yrs and I have not only had no problems with theft or any other type of crime. Maybe I'v been lucky. I have fallen asleep on the grass at the boat terminal and been awakened for the last boat for home by the Express employees. As far as a rape victim, we all as a community of decent people have a responsibility to stand up and put our money where our mouths are to avert an act of that nature. It just isnt an acceptable act under any circumstances, only my opinion.

I don't want people to think Avalon isn't safe for a single woman these days. As long as you use your head and don't put yourself into difficult situations, you should be fine. Just don't get lulled into thinking you can turn off your brain. There are people visiting here who don't have ties to the community and they may observe "opportunities." Some "locals" may as well.

On the rape statistics last summer, no one releases that info. I don't know how many were "date rape" situations (not that that is any better, but it results from a different set of circumstances than someone lying in wait on a dark road).

Kelpmermaid is right- plenty of drinking since no one has to drive. I drink a lot at night when I go out, but it is usually water to keep me hydrated after a day of diving.

If you drink in moderation (as you should when diving anyway), and use your brain, the only thing a woman has to worry about in Avalon is Dr. Bill himself... and he's a gentleman!

I had a set of ANKL weights disappear last October. Been there about six times and that was the first time that anything turned up missing.
