Has anyone been there recently? I'm trying to find information on getting there from the US, and booking accomodations/diving once I am there. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I just got back from the solomon Islands on Saturday.
I didn't travel from the US (I'm from Australia) but
I did run into a few Americans and they all seemed
to fly to the Solomons via Sydney.
I just loved the Solomons. I spent one week at Gizo
and one week at Munda. The diving was good at Gizo
but I really did not like the place. It was dirty and
the people did not seem particularly friendly - but
that's just my opinion.
Munda was fantastic. I stayed at Agnes Lodge - not 5
star but comfortable. The dive operator is based at
Agnes Lodge - it's called Solomon Sea Divers. Their
email address is dcooke@welkam.solomon.com.sb if you
wanted to get in touch with them.
Surface temp was around 27 - 29c and water temp was
a constant 29c (sorry, don't know what that is in f)
Viz was not great at the time due to a lot of unseasonal
rain - anywhere from 10m to 30m (again, sorry I don't
know what that is in feet).
Lots of wall and reef diving - also a few WWII wrecks.
I loved the Solomons. If I can help you with anything
more specific, just ask.
I've heard now is a good time, with tourism way down. Trying to convince someone to hit the road with me for three or four weeks (Fiji/Solomons). It's hard, Americans don't frequently take that type of holiday.
But, airfare to Fiji is reasonable right now. I want to go somewhere in the Pacific/Indian ocean this fall.
