A teenage girl from West Sussex has died in a drowning tragedy while on a family holiday in the Algarve.
Mia Knight, 16, is believed to have fallen unconscious while swimming in the sea at Portimao in Portugal on Wednesday.
Lifeguards managed to bring her ashore and spent more than an hour trying to resuscitate her, but to no avail.
It is believed Mia was due to collect her GCSE results on Thursday.
Facebook tributes have been paid to the youngster, who went to Hove Park School in Hove near Brighton.
One, from Josie Milligan, said: "RIP Mia Knight, so sad to think such a young life could be lost. Much love to the family. Will miss you Mia, never forgotten!"
Another, from Ashleigh Messer, read: "RIP Mia Knight, you beautiful girl. You will NEVER be forgotten, one of the loveliest girls I'd ever met. Still can't believe you're gone."
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman confirmed it is offering consular assistance to Mia's family.
I don't think that this was dive related. Sadly we lose a few Texans every month to drownings in the summer. This story is odd tho in that they say the teenage may have had a heart attack, perhaps from mistranslation of the original story. It seems that the family expected emergency medical care like home while on holiday in another country; it's best to keep in mind that that often is not the case.
A BRITISH schoolgirl has died after suffering a suspected heart attack while swimming in the sea off Portugal.
Mia Knight, 16, became ill after wading into the water during a family break in Portimao on the Algarve.
Lifeguards tried for an hour to resuscitate the teenager as distraught holidaymakers looked on.
Mia, who lived with her mother Tracy and stepfather John Hall, 40, in Hove, near Brighton, East Sussex, had ventured into the sea off Carvoeiro beach on Wednesday.
Mr Hall said: “Mia had a life jacket on and was wading out into the water, where she intended to go on an inflatable ride, when she became ill. She did not drown and we suspect she suffered a heart attack.
“Eventually people were running up to the police station to ask for help because the ambulance had still not arrived. When it did there was no doctor, just paramedics. We don’t know whether the ambulance could have got here faster or whether Mia could have been saved, but I live in Brighton and if there is a problem on the beach you are used to seeing help come very quickly.”
Great news for vacation divers who cannot talk themselves into buying a personal CO tank tester!
>> Rent one for a week or longer here <<
Now let's see more CO readings in your trip reports, ok...??
