Got off work and to bed around 0200. I had a meeting to go to at 0700 but decided not to go and slept in, sort of.
At 0824 the cell phone starts playing “The Entertainer”. So I jump up and say, NorthWest Recumbents. A voice on the other end says; “You want to make a dive?” Crap, it’s the fulltime Marine Deputy so this can’t be good.
City found a body at Independence Point and we don’t have an idea as to what happened. OK, let me get a shower and I’ll be on my way.
At 0835 I’m showered, have the camera gear loaded and headed down the road. I get there at 0448 and there he is, plopped on the beach like he was trying to get a tan but fully dressed.
We get briefed by city as follows: The guy is reported floating face down right off Independence Point which is right down town. The Fire/Med respond, Pike Pole him out of the water and start CPR. DUH, he been there a while so it must have looked like Captain Ahab harpooning Moby Dick to try and get Jona back. Evidence, what’s that? I guess we can put all the cut clothing back together.
So I take one of the FNG’s and we search the area. He’s going to run a parallel line 6’ out and I’m doing a 12’ line. We started about 150’ from where the body was found and we start a nice slow run along the sea wall.
The FNG was looking at something so I pass him and complete my run to the beach. Just as I sit up the FNG says “I have some drag marks”. I go look and sure enough that’s what they are.
I go up and get the video while the FNG does measurements. After some UW video we secure and pack thing up. I copied off the tape and delivered it to the City PD. Now time will tell as to what may have happened.
It looks like this guy just tried to drown himself in the Tacoma area just a week or so ago. Hummmm, while I’m typing this the news just reported it has been ruled a suicide. I’m thinking that’s a bit premature but it’s not our case.
