Two-year-old 'dies' when his heart stops for 40 minutes and he doesn't breathe ... and then makes an amazing recovery
A two-year-old whose heart stopped for 40 minutes and was technically dead when his mother found him is now running around his family's home, smiling and acting like any other toddler.
Caleb Teodorescu, of Phoenix, Arizona, was released from the hospital after a week and now doctors are amazed by his miraculous recovery.
Dr Corey Philpot, a pediatric critical care physician at the Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, told ABC News: 'He quite literally died outside the hospital.'
Terrible accident: Little Caleb was found lying face-down, motionless in the family's swimming pool
Caleb’s frantic mother Mihaela Teodorescu found his lifeless body lying face-down in the family’s outdoor swimming pool.
His heart had stopped, and he wasn't breathing when he arrived at the hospital.
She said: 'I was crying out to God. I was saying, "God you cannot take him from me!"'
Race to survive: A neighbour performed CPR before paramedics arrived
She desperately screamed for help and a neighbour ran in and began performing CPR.
At the hospital, Caleb was in a comatose state and on a breathing machine when Dr Philpot and his team got to work.
They put him on blood pressure medication and their chief concern throughout was whether Caleb would suffer long-term brain injuries.
They decided to use therapeutic hypothermia.

Dr Philpot told ABC News: 'Therapeutic hypothermia slows down the metabolic rate of the body and, in this case, of the brain.
'We cooled him down to 32 degrees and put him in cold hybernatory state to prevent ongoing brain injury.'
After 24 hours doctors began the process of warming him up again.
As they slowly rewarmed his body over four days they noticed an improvement in Caleb's heart condition.

About five days after he was admitted to the hospital, Caleb began making a drastic, remarkable recovery.
Dr Philpot said: 'He started to move, and then his movements became purposeful, and then he opened his eyes. We could tell that he was on the quick road to recovery.'
Caleb’s father Ovy Teodorescu told ABC 15: 'Our doctor told us in his 23 years of being with the hospital in the pediatric intensive care unit, they did not have a case like this. Not even close.
'He said out of the good outcomes, Caleb is the best of the best of the best.'
Dr Philpot said that when Caleb left the hospital most people would not have noticed what he went through.
