Divers prepare to search the water at Singing Pines Recreation area after a call was placed to emergency agencies saying someone had been missing in the lake for five minutes.

ANDERSON — Divers and rescue workers recovered the body of a Williamston man who drowned in Hartwell Lake at Singing Pines Recreation Area on Monday afternoon, a coroner said.
It was the third drowning at the same swimming area in less than three months.
James David McClain, 47, was swimming there around 4:45 p.m. with his wife and grandson, said Charlie Boseman, chief deputy Anderson County coroner.
McClain and his wife were headed back to shore but James stopped to retrieve his grandson’s float, which had sunk, Boseman said.
Blanche McClain said she saw her husband going underwater and surfacing twice as he tried to find it, and he never came up after his third try, the coroner said.
James McClain’s body was found in about eight feet of water, Boseman said. James McClain knew how to swim. He had recently experienced worsening health, including diabetes and using a cane to walk, but had no known heart trouble, Boseman said.
His daughter drove up to the park and ran to the shore, crying for both her father and her son.
Blanche McClain called 911 shortly after her husband did not surface. The park is within a mile of the South Carolina/Georgia border and Georgia rescue workers from Hartwell and Hart County assisted as their counterparts from Anderson County arrived. Divers from the Anderson Technical Rescue Team as well as workers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources were involved in the effort.
Crystal Sabrina Lester, 33, of Athens, Ga., drowned July 4 during an outing with her family.
Elio Segura, 33, also of Athens, Ga., drowned May 12. Segura was the first person to drown in Anderson County this year. He was born in Guatemala and he was buried in his native country, where his family lives.
