XTX50 good ice diving reg or not

So I recently signed up for an ice diving class and was going over gear requirements with the LDS and told them I had the Apeks XTX50 with the XTX50 Octo. He gave me an odd response and a look of I'm not too keen on that setup. He then explained that sherwood is a much better brand for ice diving, but I could try with the XTX50. What does everyone on here think? I'm not asking if the Apeks is a good brand because I know it is I have been diving with these for a while now. But I have no experience ice diving, so not sure where to go on this one. Thanks for your advice.

I'd question why the shop didn't like them... you shouldn't have any issues - they are better than the regs he prefers.

I'll bet the shop is a sherwood dealer, and NOT an apeks dealer.
For what its worth, I've dove my tx50/ds4 down to 38 degrees with no problems

The sherwood blizzard is designed specifically for ice conditions. It would be my preference. I use one for my deco reg.

the apeks is one of the best cold water reg. on the market today. That dear should be more worried about put on a good class than what your regs are. He is just looking to sell you different reg. that you don't need.

The Apex Line from the 40 up are awesome cold water regs and will breathe easier than anything Sherwood has on the market.

I've been under the ice a couple of times, I also dive all year-round, and in the winter the temps are 34 - 36, and I have no issues with my ATX/DST or my TX/DS4. Great regs.

I've had my XTX 50 (on my left post) and my XTX 200 (on my right post) under the ice many times.

I also routinely dive in the 30's (It can be cold up here year round at depth).

Never had a problem nor did I ever doubt that my regs would work flawlessly.

Just my two cents...Get out and enjoy the ice dives. Cheers!
