What is a servo device?

I've been studying on the mechanism of various regulators on the market. I have read much about pivoting regulators and even dived with some. I have seen the Poseidon and Dive Rite Jetstreams (are identical!) use this servo assit. I tried searching the web extensively but could not get any answer to my question
What is a servo device?
How the servo-assit device works in the upstream regulators?

Im not sure exactly what the servo would be in a regulator. But i do know that a servo for robotics or mechanical purpose is and electrical device to help ad in the steering/maneuverability of an object. Dunno if that helps you any.
