What is "Black Friday"? I mean I know it is sale day, but why "Black" and what date is "Black Friday"? I apologise in advance if this is a stupid question with an obvious answer. Cheers

Have you ever braved a megamart on the day after Thanksgiving?

If you ever do, you'll understand why it's called "Black Friday."

We don't have such a thing out in the colonies.

So is "Black Friday" a specific date or just a name applied when having a big sale?

Huge, overhyped sales on the day after Thanksgiving. Stark raving mad shoppers flock to the megamarts in search of bargains (and bragging rights) on Christmas gifts.

As Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, that day is called "Black Friday."

I think they call it Black Friday because, aside from the Christmas season, retailers run "In the red" (Lose money) for the rest of the year. When I worked in retail, if we didn't have a good Christmas sales season, we weren't going to survive.

Got it, thanks.
