I have the idea to start my own website where people can have their online divelog. By filling in the required info a nicely formatted logentry is created. From your personal homepage (made when you create your account) you can access and look, print or alter your info.

The idea is to put this functionality in a wiki where everybody can see your dive-entries (but you as the owner are the only one who can edit/alter them).
Nice thing is that you can list your entries from an internetcafe near your local divesite (I do a lot of diving in Indonesia for example) and print them when you are at home. Service will be free of charge.

hey edward, moved your thread here to Research and Development

best of luck with your idea

okay, didn't see that so I think I posted the message twice. The last one with a poll.

Sounds OK, but I'd be concerned about the security of the data. How do I know it will still be there in 20 years? That's the main reason I haven't bought into the online logbook idea.

Good point, no website is quaranteed to live 20 years, no matter what the intend/dreams when you start a website like that.

I myself wouldn't keep this as the only means to log my dive. I think it would not be too much hassle to make it possible to create a nicely formatted printout (maybe a pdf could be created) which you can download and print when you want it.

That way you are never dependant on somebody else.

One of the things I like most about my paper dive log is the stamps/stickers I've gotten from the dive boats and the signatures of buddies from around the globe.

Now one where you could upload photos, pull in dive site maps and include those in the log would be great as well as being able to select the print format (large (8-1/2X 11) or small (standard dive log binder)) would be great. Have it accept uploads from dive computers...while we are blue skying...

I currently use www.divelogonline.com. It works great, but I wish it had some features like being able to search by user or making your dive profile publically available, and just some other nit pick things on how you log. Other than that it's a great site and I have ALL my dives logged on there.

I too have contemplated writing my own web based dive log using php/mysql and making it multi-user, but I haven't really gotten farther than the database design so far.

I was thinking about this idea as well. However, for me, I was thinking along the lines of a tool for dive shops/operators as a way to verify logs, etc. For instance, if someone forgets their logbook... no problem, just go online to verify.
It'd be cool for a buddy to be able to digitally sign the log book as well, or dive operators for that matter. Finally, make it so the site can then export a copy to the enduser that can be copied to hard disk, a pda/smartphone, or jump drive so they have a copy with them as well.
