Litter bugs on high seas foul Titanic's resting place

"Everybody who dives down there leaves plastic flowers or a plaque or something," he said. "It sort of looks like one of those places where there's been an accident on the highway... Basically, it's an archeological site that's no longer pure."

Sometimes it's just best to leave well enough alone! Thinking about the litter and other items in this site makes you wonder if mankind will ever learn....

Shark fin ban gathers steam in Maryland and beyond - The Washington Post

In many ways, the push to target shark fins is modeled on the successful effort to outlaw raw ivory imports into the United States in 1989, a year ahead of a global ban on African elephant ivory. In both cases, according to Beth Lowell, campaign director at the international group Oceana, “It’s the product which is driving the unsustainable trade of a species. If we can impact the trade of the product, we can have a difference outside the U.S. as well.”

I 100% agree with the above! We need to keep on the road towards a global ban! - :D

In science, words matter | The Republic

"The popularized term “garbage patch” misrepresents the complexity of the problem. Garbage sounds like something that can be simply collected and disposed of. But the widespread and dispersed nature of the problem makes any cleanup effort extremely difficult. Experts are still unsure how to tackle it. The only credible solution in the long run is to stop plastic waste from entering the ocean, which would take both public policy shifts and widespread education efforts. I do not believe the term “garbage patch” conveys this crucial message."

Excellent piece - please share :D
