I just spent a long weekend diving in the Faroe Islands (part of Denmark but between Scotland the Iceland). I flew there with the national carrier, Atlantic Airways from London Stanstead (they only fly from London in summer. They also have flights from Denmark and Scotland.)
Janus Joensen at Faroe Dive is very reliable and efficient at responding to e-mails. His e-mail address is faroedive@faroedive.fo. You can check out his web site: www.faroedive.fo. Tel. +298-218929 or +298-224224.
Diving is expensive but it takes at least 3-4 hours to pick you up at the hotel, drive to the site, suit up and walk to th shore with all gear, pack up and drive back to the hotel. One dive is 695 Dkr, 2 dives 650 Dkr per dive, 3 dives 600 DKr per dive and 4 or more dives cost 550 Dkr per dive including dry suit, equipment and transport. (For ease of reference, knock off a zero from the above figures to get the Pound sterling conversion and double the pound conversion to get USD.)
The viz in summer is not great because there is a lot of plankton--10-15 metres tops. In winter its much better. There are lots of kelp forests, star fish , small stonefish, and various cold water fish like cod fish. You will dive from fantastic drop offs where the volcanic islands just fall into the sea. One dive was just in front of a church and when the good citizens finished praying yesterday they were amused to find us in their parking lot packing up.
Janus and his divemaster live near Klaksvick--the second buggest town in the Faroes. Its a 2.5 hour bus trip from Vagar airport or Torshavn, the capital. Recommended hotel is the Klaksvik Hotel. It's a ten minute walk from the bus stop. Look for the big blue building on a hill with Hotel in big letters. There are no taxis waiting, so if you have dive equipment get the hotel to call you one or plan on a slow walk to the hotel!
ever in the Faroes check Tórshavnar Froskmannafelag (the national dive club) for diveplaces in "Faroese tho" But give me a call and well see what we can do =}
