Digital Subscription Automatically Included with DAN Membership DAN’s Alert Diver magazine has once again taken the industry-leading publication to a new level; the must-read quarterly is now available in a digital version for the iPad. “Just as we are fully committed to ever-improving the quality of our print product,” said Stephen Frink, publisher of Alert Diver, “we also realize there is a global audience for Alert Diver, and reaching them is important. Finally SOMEBODY gets it right! LOVE this. Easy to carry and catalog all issues on my ipad, easier to read on a plane or otherwise traveling without hauling around a stack of glossy paper and best of all no worthless app to download only to find out you've still got to pay AGAIN for the content. Well done! The only thing missing now is the ability to opt out of home delivery of the glossy paper mag and go totally digital.
Why can't other dive mags, or mags in general, figure this out? I sent an email to editor of Scuba Diving mag about their app after he crowed about it in the Editor's thoughts column prompting me to download the app. Sure, that's free, but you've got to pay MORE than the subscription price per issue to download it digitally. His article talked about "being green" by going digital, higher res pictures and all the other benefits of viewing on iPad. What it doesn't mention is that you'll have to not only pay again for something you're already subscribed to but pay MORE than the paper edition. WTF? Not surprisingly I've not heard back from these knuckleheads.
Kudos to DAN, not only for a very good magazine but also for providing it in a more consumable fashion.
Now, if someone would just build into the app a search function that would give you the ability to search across all your downloaded mags and return all pertinent articles. This is a great start though!
