At 6:00 AM Eastern Time (GMT -4), the administration team successfully moved the scubaboard database to a new high performance data server. What does this mean? In simple terms, every page that is displayed on ScubaBoard is a function (query) of the database. A faster database means a faster ScubaBoard, and a better user experience. This is just one of the steps that we're taking to make ScubaBoard a better and faster website for you to enjoy. We'll keep you posted on the improvements we're making to the site, and of course please feel free to let us know what you think of the user experience!
At 9:00 am this morning the admin team successfully cut over to our new server cluster. Access to the old servers will be phased out as cached DNS for the old servers gets replaced with the new.
If you ping ScubaBoard.com you can tell if you have been moved over: 69.28.64.162 is the new IP where as 209.208.13.242 was our old IP.
That server move was the easiest by far. Since then, we have only two outages. One about six months ago due to a 20 amp circuit breaker in our 30 amp service cabinet that flipped. The other was yesterday due to a typo in our mx records (my fault). We have become so stable that when people tell me we are down, my initial response is almost always that they have lost connectivity to the internet.
Many thanks to Dallas, our server and db guru, for identifying the root of the problem in about five minutes when he was alerted to it.
