Bill Mee, George Irvine and Dan Volker have become involved in a project conceived by GUE, one in which we need DIR or DIR’ish (meaning good divers with an interest in Adventure/Exploration diving) , to become part of this team. We will be running specific reeflines, the Project Baseline functions being "transections along ledge lines (and some unique feature areas) of Palm Beach county between 20 feet and 270 feet deep ( corresponding to reeflines from shorelines left from past glacial periods), where we will record/document biologic diversity and volume, using photos and videography. The tiny contour 1080p cameras are fine for this, and we can probably get a few on loan if needed. I’ll stick to my Canon J Data will be entered into the Project Baseline Database, and utilized specifically by FAU as well as others in Marine Science, including Reef Rescue http://reef-rescue.org/ . This Google Earth based system is a tremendously powerful tool, one which could we can all use to really make a difference. Without scientific "baselines" established showing the health of these marine ecosystems, there is no way for FUTURE legislative protection to refer to NEGATIVE CHANGES, since no past record will be there to compare with--this is why we have a need for a baseline now. This project is a direct request from Dr Ray McAllister to US ( see his bio http://www.dinodiver.com/html/cirriculum_vitae.html } ! When you first join this team, you will be diving in groups on transections along the 20 foot , 60 foot or 90 foot deep ledge systems, based on which you prefer. As each member’s skills and talents become known to the team, the range of dives can change to include the 140 ft and 220 foot deep and deeper reeflines where essentially zero scientific information has been recorded. Many of the deeper dives will be scooter dives, and they will cover very long runs with each dive J We will have special group rates/club rates on the dive boats, and dramatically reduced prices for any team members coming from out of town, that need to stay in a hotel. I expect to have access to sets of doubles that can be loaned out (as on the DIR Adventure dives some of you were here for), and Bill and I will be buying helium at volume prices to allow dirt cheap helium for team members ( relatively speaking J ) Wakulla operated with a large team of divers from all over, and we expect it will be much easier to participate in Team dives here off of Palm Beach, than it ever was for the WKPP divers. PM me if you like, or just post back your interest, and when you would want to begin the dives with us to this new forum. This forum is for the team, and the idea is to discuss the dives planned, the gear, the people planning, and everything we find enjoyable to discuss between ourselves.
Can we take other sampling tools...like say spearguns?
Yes :-) . That is fine with George and with Bill and myself... there will likely be some team members not fully embracing the spearfishing on deep runs....probably more than a few....this would be a buddy decision within teams.
Welcome to the team Kathy. As I dove with you on the DIR trip, I am sure you will fit in perfectly. I will be spending some time going over research issues with Dr McAllister next week, and then start planning dives. I will post a calendar and dive areas each " research mission" will cover..then this calendar will have team members sign up for the dates and sites they want to make.
Although I'm not sure how often we could get to Florida, I would love to support this. In fact, I'd love to start something similar here in Puget Sound, so I'm really looking forward to hearing about how this goes.
Please keep me in the loop too and I will inform the "usual suspects" here up north.
Best,
Claus
PS: Let me know if you need to record the exact location of certain points under water; I have an inexpensive, reliable solution for that.
Claus, actually, I'd like to hear what you are suggesting....our data points are Gps sensitive, so the better we record our "in the water" and then "back on the surface" points, the better.
If you have some kind of fiber optic line that lets us tow a gps on a torpedo float almost directly overhead---that would be even more awesome!
