offically the sand will be 230 feet deep. However, a few folks (uncle ricky, etc) have been out to the site and say it will be more like 215-218 feet deep.

that'll make the flight deck at about 130 feet.

(the reason for the "error" in the 230 feet deep I imagine is due to the fact that they got that depth from a chart/map instead of taking a 44 mile roundtrip boat ride and then going down 215 to 218 feet to put your
    gauge console "in the sand".)

    USS Oriskany as a Reef

    February 16, 2006
Thank you to everyone who has submitted information on the latest news about the USS Oriskany!

    FLORIDA
EPA permits Navy to sink old warship

PENSACOLA - The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday cleared
the Navy to sink the carrier USS Oriskany off Pensacola Beach in May,
jump-starting long-delayed plans for a new program to turn old warships
into artificial reefs. The agency issued a permit for disposal of
toxins known as polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, contained in the
ship's electrical cable, insulation and paint. The permit was the final
hurdle Navy leaders needed before returning the famed Korean and
Vietnam War carrier from a shipyard in Beaumont, Texas, to Pensacola.
The Oriskany is the first of more than 20 ships the Navy hopes to
dispose of through reefing. The target date for sinking the ship is May
    15.

Pensacola Dive Company gets you to the Oriskany!

Join the Pensacola Dive Club through the Pensacola Dive Company.
Dive with Capt Ron and friends. When the the dive club members are splitting the expenses a 2-3 tank dive is costing each diver less than $30.00 in boat expenses for the whole day!
Capt Ron is not in the dive business to get rich, he is here to share his love for diving with others. He works with handicapped and amputee divers and he offers private and small group NAUI dive instruction at the most affordable rates in the country. He can do this because the dive club members help pay the expenses of operating the dive boat. Capt Ron takes his students out on open water dives, real dives in the Gulf of Mexico, not just beach or spring dives for training. You can email Capt Ron at info@pensacoladivecompany.com. Get on the dive club email list and when Capt Ron schedules a dive, he'll send you an email saying when and where to meet. Those club members who reply first, dive first. or call Capt Ron at (850) 4- DIVING check out the website www.pensacoladivecompany.com
