where can I buy a 1inch diameter solid dowel made of plastic about 2 feet long? i have tried the harware stores here and they only have wood and metal. I want to make some regulator tools to assist my reg service shop. the current plastic tools are starting to wear out. instead of buying new ones i have the technology to widdle my own i just need the material.

Almost any machine shop should be able to order suitable stock in various types of plastic, nylon, etc. My experience is that if I tell them what I need, they are happy to order it for me for a small charge or add it to one of their orders for free if I don't need it special ordered immediately.

The last time I ordered 3/4" moly filled nylon stock, it came in 48" lenghts and cost me $6.37.

You can also try McMaster-Carr. It is often a bit more expensive, but they have almost anything. You can find it in their on-line catalog at:

www.mcmaster-carr.com

They will sell 1" MDS Nylon (similar to Nylatron) for $3.66 per ft in lenghts up to 60 inches. (stock number 8554K4)

I get a lot of my plastic stock from: http://www.usplastic.com - their prices & shipping are reasonable and they fill even the small orders with the same speed & efficiency as the big ones.
I get the plastic squeeze bottles for packaging talc; the tubing, check valves & fittings to make $4 pee valves, and sheet plastic to make $20 backplates from the guys.
They have gloves, too.

I would be really interested in the parts and process to build the $4.00 Pee valve. It sure beats the prices I have seen around here for them.
