I had a sheephead over the weekend at casino point being particulartly friendly with me going as far as swimming around my head and eventually trying to bite my eyes through my mask. That was interesting and hard to remember that he couldn't get me!! He hung out with me for a good 5 minutes or so and it was quite fun.

I somehow remember hearing somebody mentions a particular sheephead at casino point that had been named? Am i dreaming?

Oscar. He is a fairly good sized fish. Last I knew he would usually hang out around the wrecks.

On Easter Sunday, Oscar was spotted closer to the kelp beds about 25' from the stairs at Casino Point. We saw him during our Fish ID dive for the AOW.

glad to hear i am not crazy.

'Oscar' was in about 30' and he was probably 14'' long male? give or take a bit? not the biggest male sheephead i saw all day but fair size.

he was next to a rock under some kelp with his lady. what shall we call her?

I don't think the one you saw was "Oscar" -- he's a bigger fellow than that. He's really a magnificent animal, IMO, so you'll know him when you see him. I have seen him at about 30' -- he tried to drive off my BF/buddy, LOL!

how big is Oscar then?

is this maybe Oscar Jr? he may have been bigger i just didn't want to be telling a fisherman's "it was this big kind of story!"

Actually there is more than one Oscar in the dive park. I think there are four fairly large male sheephead (2-3 ft) that are seen there. I once saw three of them together interacting in a not altogether friendly way.

I believe Oscar has some distinctive identifying marks next to his gills. It looks as if he was in a fight or had been attacked as there are some noticable scars. Maybe I'm wrong, but I remember my instructor pointing this out to me when we saw him last.

You can often get him to come by banging a couple rocks together
