I'm glad you and your wife had a great time in "our" waters!! I found your report delightful! It was refreshing to see our "local" critters seen through the eyes of someone that has never seen them before! I cant say I ever take them for granted, but it's good to be reminded that so many of them are unique to the area.

You got lucky, that's for sure, but those lucky days are what keeps us coming back! Sounds like a great trip, I hope I can take my wife on a similar one someday! Btw, from what I have seen, most decent dive boats in CA treat divers similarly: They expect you to know what you're doing, dive within YOUR limits and be self-responsible. I love it!
