Nicholas Canyon Malibu CA Dive 08 Jul 08

Date: 08 July 2008
Dive Location: Nicholas Canyon
Buddy(ies): Ari and Tara
Time: 9:20ish
Bottom Time: 4 minutes
Max Depth: 20FSW
Vis: 1-2 feet.
Wave height: 2-4
Temp at depth: unk
Surface Temp:unk
Tide information: Low tide at 8:02
Gas mix:21% regular air
Best moment: Packing up the gear
Things to do differently next time:
Comments: Meeting two divers from the east coast (Pennsylvania) for a dive. They had not done a beach dive before, but have some salt water experience. We met at Malibu Road dive site and were greeted by both 3-5 foot waves and due to low tide lots of rocks. So we opted to move to Nicholas Canyon. Nicholas Canyon was more protected and offered reasonable waves of 1-2 feet with the occasional 3-4 foot wave coming in. We swam out and dropped down into darkness. I hit bottom with my feet because I could not see it. Then we all got horizontal (still not really seeing the bottom) an started to swim to try to get deeper and some visibility. After swimming less than 5 feet we experienced buddy separation. I rejoined by two buddies and thumbed the dive. On the surface we all agreed that three divers in zero to 2 feet visibility, 2 of which were new to kelp was just not going to happen.

So back to the beach, where a wave caught Tara and she made here obligatory sacrifice of both fins to the ocean. Then with Tara on shore, in an effort to appease the ocean, Ari sacrificed a mask.

We then made our way back to our cars and home.
