LOS ANGELES- Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles received a report that the 90-foot commercial dive vessel Vision was taking on water seven miles north of San Nicolas Island, Calif.
The vessel’s crew reported that they lost their rudder and were sinking. The crew was able to apply a temporary patch to slow the flooding, and the Coast Guard requested all 33 people (26 passengers and seven crew members) to put on lifejackets. The patch on the vessel is holding well, and there is no need to pump at this time
Coast Guard assets that responded included an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Sector San Diego, the Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin, and a C-130 aircraft from Air Station Sacramento. The Naval vessel Robert E. Peary also arrived on scene to assist.
Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin will be evacuating the passengers off the dive vessel for safe transport.
LOS ANGELES - The Coast Guard says 26 passengers have been rescued after a dive boat lost its rudder and began taking on water near San Nicolas Island.
The 90-foot ship Vision, based in Oxnard, called for help Sunday morning. The captain reported the vessel had lost its steering and sprung a leak just north of the island, which is about 70 miles west of Los Angeles.
The Coast Guard cutter Blackfin reached the stricken ship and ferried passengers back to land. No injuries were reported.
Authorities say the Vision's 7-member crew was able to fix the leak and motor the boat back to shore with its steering partially disabled.
Glad to hear the boat made it back. It is not surprising how a competent crew can make a repair and bring their boat home. I never go to sea without the wax part of a wax toilet bowl ring in a plastic bag in my seabag. (That is in case the boat has forgotten theirs.) It is amazing how many leaking things it will seal.

I did 4 days on the Vision in early July. I am not surprised at all that they were able to handle everything and get both the passengers and the boat taken care of. Excellent boat, Capt. and crew. Glad to hear everyone was OK and the boat will be back in operation.

Good to read there were no serious issues and I’m happy all made it back in good shape. When things go wrong out at sea, even little things, the OMG factor is ratcheted up several notches. It says a lot for the crew of the Vision, they must be pretty good.
Interesting story. I'm sure one that passengers and crew can tell their grandkids. Glad everybody is okay and that the boat made it back. Hope it's up and running soon.
When they reported seven miles off San Nicholas I immediately pictures bottoming out on Begg Rock, but it's off the west end. Maybe they hit a log. I lost a prop on the Palawan wreck and a year or so later lost another one on the Olympic II.
