Beyond the Surf, my latest article for Easy Reader newspapers is now online. It will be featured in the May issue of Beach Magazine, including my first cover photo. :)Search for "Phil Garner" |

What a great synopsis of SoCal diving. Fantastic! And congrats on the cover.

Again, Great article and pictures....When ever I do a shore dive I'm always amazed how many people will ask "did you see anything?" I usually respond with a list and they stare in disbelief. I don't think our coast and kelp forest gets enough praise. I think your article is the perfect overall experience.:D Thanks for sharing your dives with us.

When Terranea opened we always had people come up to us asking what we see down there. Merry took some of our photos and made laminated cards. We gave some to the kayak vendor and the hotel to show customers. The kayak guy said he would show customers the cards while they were over the reefs and tell everyone that all those critters were right under their boats.

Thank you again Phil for bringing the ocean's stories home...

The July issue is finally online as of August 14th.
South Bay Variety Show

My August article was bumped for photo contest results, but should appear in print on September 4th and online sometime after that.

I love that article, and in fact, I shared it with our local online dive club.

Too many people stop looking at what's down there. I know I've been guilty of it a time or two. But Max, you are in the same club with Jan Kocian, one of our local divers and photographers (and artists) who is always finding an event or behavior or something none of us has ever knowingly seen, and sharing it with us.

My dear friend airsix says, "You will never have a bad dive in Puget Sound, if you look at what is there, and not what isn't.". It holds true elsewhere as well.

Nice job, Phil. People (non-divers) often ask what I see when I dive at Casino Point. If I think they are really interested, I'll give them my web site address and YouTube channel. If I tell them that the dive park is visited by divers from all over the world, they are astounded. Even after thousands of dives there I still see new stuff (includsing a few new "stupid diver tricks").

Good for you! Great article! Great Pictures! Keep up the great work!

You are fortunate that it is not a weekly publication. Approximately 25, perhaps more years ago I had, according to my publisher, the very first regularly scheduled weekly dive column in any US news paper and possibly the first in the world. For one who is trained in science and not journalism it was an ordeal at first, then I go the hang of it and it became fun! fun! fun!

Keep on snapping pictures and keep on writing-- It is a very rewarding effort, egoistically for you but so educational for the readers.
