Anyone been on the Catalina Express out of Long Beach recently? Are they weighing dive bags/carts still or now that summer is over have they loosened up?

I was there in September and no one asked to weigh my bags.

Went two weeks ago. Yes they are weighing.

After the hassle pulling my weights out of my dive roller bag, I checked the prices to rent weights and it is really cheap compared to carrying them on and off the boat and to the dive park....

Two bags each weighing under 50 lbs plus a carry on.

Yes, they can be bins with wheels and that is my problem. My roller bin (Stanley style) weighs 30# empty and no way is under 50# with gear. But its so convenient as I strap my tank to the top while rolling it around, and I can lock it while in the water. The funny thing is they never touch the thing, I roll it on, park it on the stern, and roll it off.

Tanks are separate as are weight bags.

They do allow divers a second bag, but who wants to try and handle two bags, a tank, and a weight bag?

Going off on a little tangent but how do you like those big rolling cases? I was looking at the Husky branded one at Home Depot and thought that it would be perfect for diving gear but it's HUGE! Does it get heavy if you have to cart stuff for longer distances? I love that you can lock it up and roll everything in one big box.

Does anyone know if Catalina Express allows those folding wagons that you get at Costco?

It does get heavy if you have to lug it all the way from the terminal to the Casino, but I use the luggage service (and tip well since it is so heavy). I also mounted tank straps to the top and use the tank weight to sort of counter balance the box. I was looking at the smaller 24" version (Lowes has them, Home Depot no longer carries them) to see if that would get me under the 50# limit.

Here is what they look like (Photo stolen from another member)
