My Daughter is 12 and has been diving pool and sea since age 8. We had the privilege of seeing a group of wounded warriors diving in Bonaire and she decided that that was something she wanted to be involved in for her Batmitsvah project.

She would like to interview a soldier about his or her experience before, during and after their injuries as well as the role diving has had in helping them move on. We would tape the interview and would like to make it available on youtube for the public, for our friends and family with information on how to donate to her project with all funds bieng donated via her project to SUDS. In addition she would like to do a marathon scuba event with an aim of bieng sponsored to spend 3-4 hours underwater in the pool also to raise money and to hopefully highlight this cause.

Is this all logistically feasible and how would we go about it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Craig

What wonderful intentions on your daughter’s part! A couple of thoughts:

SUDS might or might not have a presence near where you live, but there is a good chance that similar organizations do. You might want to post in your regional forum ( Pennsylvania / New York / New Jersey ) to see if there is anyone nearby doing such activities.

Your local dive shop could be a good source of information. The shop with which I was associated before a recent move regularly ran Discover Scuba programs for wounded warriors and their families. As a result we had contacts with the nearby military and veterans organizations. Had your daughter approached our shop, we would likely have mentioned her goal during our Discover programs, asking for volunteer(s) amongst the warriors to meet with her. We also did an (unrelated) underwater marathon for a different cause, so had some familiarity with what that entailed.

Alternatively, contacting veterans organizations directly could work.
