Men are like a fine wine. They start out as grapes, and it's up to women to stomp the crap out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.
practice
pain
video evidence of what you're doing wrong
keep your fin tips down
don't drop your knees
keep your head up
slice through the water on the extension
flare and pull
practice, practice, practice. There is nothing natural about it. What has to happen is that when you retract your feet/fins you do not counter act the backwards motion of your kick. This means keeping them out of the stream of motion (don't cause drag) and in a streamlined way bringing them back up.
For me, It was a day in the water -- frustrating day in the water -- just practicing until I got the feel of it. BTW, my legs were sore the next day.
Ok, what's the secret to using the frog kick to "back up"?
What everyone else said, plus the correct fins with a wide edge such as jets or turtles helps a lot. I am not 100% DIR, but the DIR-f class helped me a lot.
