I see that it is possible to do day trips from Koh Lak to Richelieu Rock. Are day trips to this dive site still feasible from points further south like Patong and Kata?

Yes, possible.
We offer them, and I'm sure some others do as well. The main problem is getting enough people together (minimum 3) to make the transfer fees of 1,500 Baht one way worthwhile.

It is much easy to do from Khao Lak as the companies who do the daytrips are based there and do not include transfers from Phuket, so you need to go by taxi. This means an early start as once you get there you have to go further north to another pier about 1.5 to 2 hours away to take the boat out the Richelieu.
But yes you can do from here it is just a very long day and relatively more expensive.
