I would be interested in hearing from anybody who has used the Ikelite housing for the Nikon Coolpix 995 digital camera as I am looking for a housing for my camera. Regards, Walt Deas.

I have that housing and like it. If you get the ike housing, plan on using a sync cord for your strobe, and not one of the 'remote' sensor flash units.

The only issue I have had, it the wheel that turns the control knob sometimes doesn't line up correctly... you have to make sure the camera is in the correct position when you tighten the mounting screw (into the tripod mount)... just mount the camera, close the housing and make sure it rotates freely... if not, open and reposition the camera... there's about 1/8 - 1/4" inch of play to work with.

The reason I recommend the sync cord method for the strobe is the way this camera uses TTL flash... the flash sensor is very close to the deflector built into the housing and mine was partially covered by the deflector, resulting in underexposure. Since the nikon 995 does NOT use preflash, I switched to a regular strobe (ike SS200), and removed the deflector from the housing (it's mounted with 2 sided tape)... problem solved.

Other things I've ran into: the camera flash has to be up if you are using a strobe... this allows the ttl sensor to be exposed... but you have to remember to turn off the internal flash (it's in the main menu, 2nd page...flash options or something like that. The correct choice is "internal flash off" = ON
makes sense if you think about it, but could have been worded better.

I've shot most everything is aperature priority mode... white balance set to flash, or whatever it's called. The macro on this camera is great... set it to macro mode ... but beware this will increase focus speed for non-macro shots. I've used f10 for anything closer than 1ft... f4 or 5, or so, for 3ft+.

All the pics on my website were shot with the 995, ike housing, and ike strobe. My first trip with it was this past march. I'm very happy with the setup.

one other thing: if you are not planning on using an external strobe... the internal flash can't be used according to the manual... I never tried it, though.

Ken...don't know why I haven't seen your gallery before now! You've got some great stuff in there! I have a Nikon 880 but Ike's price for a housing and the need for a strobe to start kept me from taking it u/w. Sometimes wish I had!

thanks... you've probably seen some of the pics "piecemeal"... I finally put up an index page for all of 'em.

I love the nikon, but it does get a little pricey with the ike housing/strobe. The olympus gets you u/w cheaper, and you guys/gals have great shots with it.... I already had the nikon (matter of fact, after my wife purchased it, and I played around with it... I sold all my 35mm equip...(nikon n90s, 5 or 6 lenses, etc.) because I was so impressed with this thing... especially the macro.

So, when I decided to house it, I went with ikelite... If somebody already has the nikon 99x, I'd say go for the ikelite... If somebody is gonna buy a camera and housing, mainly to take it underwater, I'd probably recommend olympus, just because of the cost.

It's the one thing I miss about using the CP880. The Olympus is good but you have to watch that 8" distance thing!

8 in.? I'm spoiled... I almost bump into stuff before I can't focus :)

I focuses under 1".

I also like the non-preflash.

I'm going to the keys in Oct... I'm gonna have to call and get a WAL.... gonna do some reefs with the wife, and some wrecks with whomever... and really want to go wide on the wrecks.. Will yours fit an ike housing? feel like renting:D

Thanks for the info re the Iklelite housing. Looks like I will eventually go that way. Now to sell all my Nikonos gear!
Enjoyed looking at the photographs on your web-site. Regards, Walt Deas. www.scubahistory.com

I've read your website several times, always finding something new...or old....and facinating. I'm sorry but I just never connected the name. You've led a very interesting and influential life. Thank you for all you've done, we are reaping the rewards.

Thanks folks. I hope to add more to the web-site, when I find the time. Busy completing two travel videos set on the west coast of Scotland.
