What's the reason for the end of C-x0x0

I was just browsing around and realized that the C-x0x0 has a v. good ratings in terms of picture quality and so on, and the last camera made for the series is C-7070, and the review for this camera is excellent too.
What's the main reason for the series to shut down?

Not good enough to equal a slightly more expensive SLR.

Not dumb enough to work as a cheap point and shoot.
