I recently have used a point and shoot camera which I had won in 2012 since my SLR housing is in service.

With this camera, an Olympus Tg-2, I have been experimenting with ambient light macro shots. In brief, I fixated the camera in the sand or between rocks, and then used its super-macro mode to take a close-up shot with no strobe. There are, naturally, some limits to this technique, but I was quite happy with some of the results.

I wrote up a how-to for ambient light macro in my blog. Let me know if you had the chance to try this technique as well and how it went!
