I have watched your show since it began. I have one problem with it. I can be wrong but this is how I feel. I have been a diver since 1976 but had to stop because of my health. I have to get this off my chest. I think you give the wrong impression with all the drinking of beer. My young son asked me, "Why do they drink so much on the show?" I did not know what to say. I lost a loved one by someone drinking and driving and I see you driving a golf cart with 2 beers in your hand every show. I saw you are always drinking. In all my years of diving I never had a beer or any kind of drink. You give the wrong impression that its okay to party, drink beer and dive. Also, how about some new episodes? There are too many repeats and how about showing the audience that you actually find some treasure or at least a coin? I don't mean to offend anyone but I feel the show is drinking and diving. This is my opinion and everyone has one.
Teach your son about the increased risk of DCS if you're dehydrated and let him make his own decision. If he's mature enough to dive, he should be mature enough to put 2 and 2 together and figure out drinking and diving don't mix.

This member has said "Thank you." to ucfdiver for this useful post:
I've never seen the show and am by no means a teetotaller. However, if I am diving or have recently been diving, I will rarely drink alcoholic beverages. I'm a "mature" diver and I don't wish to add additional DCS risk (although I've never yet taken a hit in nearly 48 years of diving).
It's hard to comment on a show I've never watched, but if alcohol is as prominent a fixture as the OP indicates, those involved are people I'd be highly unlikely to dive with. However, if I'm NOT diving, I might drink with them.
Thank you for your comments about the show. We never condone drinking and then diving, it's only after our dives or days that we weren't diving that you saw us with a beer in hand, but never did you see us drinking before we went diving. Sometimes TV can be deceiving for the sake of entertainment and the wrong message can be obtained.
The producers wanted to show a carefree hardworking lifestyle, which I guess did come off. I can guarantee you that in real life when Fizz and I are diving there's no alcohol consumed, but after we come out of the water and know we aren't going back in a beer might be in hand.

It is okay to do these things! You just don't dive when you have been drinking. Not sure how old your son is, but when he is ready to start diving, you and/or his instructor will be able to really drive home the point. Then I am sure he will understand the risks of diving while under the influence.

I'm a big fan of the show, and of the dive lifestyle.
Yes, they do drink beer AFTER the diving is done for the day. So do I. Did they drink excessively, get smashed and stupid? Do I? NO. At no point in any show did I get the impression they were doing anything unsafe or even irresponsible. Having a cold one at the end of the day is perfectly fine. Having multiple cold ones after diving is not a good idea...but one or two at the end of the day is perfectly acceptable. If my profiles put me in the WXYZ rules, then I may wait 3 or 4 hours before having a beer.
I'd love to have a cold one with Gary and Fizz after a day of diving!
